CPhI Southeast Asia 2022 Features
Southeast Asia’s Industry at glance
Industry Growth
Southeast Asia’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry will grow by 12.8%
annually with a total addressable market cap of $148.3 billion over 2021-2027 driven by increasing prevalence of chronic ailments, growing geriatric population, high investment in research and development, and increasing per capita healthcare expenditure amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Opportunities for higher-value industries
ASEAN currently plays a relatively small global role in higher-value industries such as medical technology, biopharmaceuticals, and chemicals. But shifts in global supply chains arising from trade tensions and the COVID-19 pandemic are creating opportunities for ASEAN manufacturers to break into or greatly expand their market share in such sectors.
The rise of middle class population
By 2030, the size of ASEAN’s middle class is expected to reach 334m, accounting for more than half of the population. Middle class consumers tend to be very conscious of health and wellness issues and demand better access to convenient and affordable care. Digital health services are capable of delivering quality healthcare services in a more affordable and accessible manner.
Thailand as a medical hub of ASEAN
Thailand is one of the leading pharmaceutical markets in Southeast Asia. over 2022 and 2023, annual growth in the market should accelerate to 3.5% due to a rising concern among Thais over personal health and wellness, itself partly a side-effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, the aging of Thai society, which is driving an increase in the number of individuals needing treatment for chronic non-communicable diseases, the broad coverage provided by the Universal Health Coverage scheme, and the return of foreign patients to Thai hospitals.
